Manuel Mafra Portuguese Palissy-Style Earthenware Charger

Crafted in Portugal in the late 19th century, this Palissy-style earthenware charger by Manuel Mafra (b.1831 d.1905) is among John Derian's trove of handpicked vintage & antique goods. The piece features a lifelike frog and snake resting on a glazed, moss-textured green ground. Mafra, a pioneering ceramicist, developed a distinctly Portuguese interpretation of Palissy ware, marked by its vibrant glazes, naturalistic subjects, and signature mossy bases. A similar example resides in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
